India's fatty liver surge tied to lifestyle, doctors recommend prevention
India is experiencing a rapid increase in fatty liver disease, affecting an estimated 38 % of adults. The condition is no longer limited to alcohol consumers; obesity, excess abdominal fat, metabolic syndrome, high‑sugar diets, fast‑food consumption and sedentary habits are now the primary drivers. Senior gastroenterology consultants Dr. Mahendra Singh Rajput of Amrita Hospital in Faridabad and Dr. Saurav Setthi warn that early stages often show no clear symptoms, making lifestyle changes essential.
Both experts advise a balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep and weight control. Specific beverage recommendations include black coffee without added syrups or cream, unsweetened green tea, sparkling water with a splash of lemon, fortified soy or almond milk, herbal teas such as peppermint or hibiscus, and plain water infused with cucumber or mint. These measures aim to reduce liver fat accumulation and prevent progression of the disease.
