India's UPI hits record 23.66 bn July transactions

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) reported that the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) processed 23.66 billion transactions in July 2026, a 22 % year‑on‑year rise. The total value of those transactions reached ₹29.88 lakh crore, up 19 % from a year earlier. On average, 763 million transactions were settled each day, with an average daily value of about ₹96,383 crore.

Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary gave a written reply in the Lok Sabha confirming the figures and noting that NPCI International Payments Ltd. (NIPL) is expanding the UPI ecosystem abroad through partnerships with foreign entities. UPI is now live in more than eight countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, France, Mauritius and Sri Lanka, strengthening India’s global fintech presence.

The data comes as the Indian government reviews a proposed merchant‑discount‑rate (MDR) of 0.05‑0.07 % for businesses with annual turnover of ₹1‑1.5 crore on transactions above ₹2,000, a move that could affect the majority of merchants using the platform.
