India's food label recalls and global smart packaging push tighter regulatory compliance
Food manufacturers in India are facing an emerging compliance risk as packaging label errors trigger recalls even when products pass safety tests. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is tightening enforcement, targeting missing allergen information, incorrect licence numbers, unsubstantiated health claims and other mandatory declarations. Recalls driven by labeling mistakes can lead to costly re‑printing, product withdrawals and damage to consumer confidence, prompting experts to advise continuous label monitoring against evolving regulations slated through 2026‑27.
At the same time, the broader FMCG sector is turning to smart packaging to meet complex regulatory demands worldwide. Smart packaging combines active features—such as antimicrobial coatings and freshness indicators—with digital tools like QR codes, RFID and NFC tags that enable traceability, real‑time monitoring and consumer engagement. While these technologies can help satisfy reporting obligations under extended producer responsibility and recycled‑content mandates, high implementation costs and consumer scepticism remain significant hurdles. Industry analysts stress that smart packaging must deliver genuine value in compliance, performance and cost efficiency to become a standard part of the supply chain.
