India's Food Safety Authority Cracks Down on Misleading Health Labels

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to multiple food brands for using potentially deceptive claims such as “healthy,” “organic,” “vegan,” and “zero maida.” The regulator says these terms can mislead consumers about a product’s nutritional value or certification status, and it warned that labels must comply with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Companies cited include Healthy Master, Neuherbs True Vitamin, PLAN B Plant‑Based Vegan, The Health Factory, Troovy, Emami, Organic Wisdom, Shine Organic, Two Brothers Organic Farms and World of Organic, among others. The action follows broader criticism of India’s food‑safety oversight, with concerns over adulterated products, weak laboratory capacity and inadequate enforcement of standards. Public‑health experts say accurate labelling is essential for informed choices, especially for people managing obesity, diabetes or other health conditions.
