India's FSSAI orders Pepsi, Red Bull, Monster to drop 'energy drink' label

India’s food safety regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), has directed makers of high‑caffeine beverages to stop using the term “energy drink.” Companies cited include PepsiCo, Red Bull GmbH, Monster Beverage, Reliance Industries and Hell Energy. The regulator said no Indian standards exist for the category and that claims such as “vitalises body and mind” could mislead consumers. Firms have 90 days to remove the label and may challenge the decision in court, FSSAI chief executive Rajit Punhani said.

Industry representatives initially objected, warning of brand damage and sales impact, but after a closed‑door meeting they agreed to comply. The directive comes as India’s high‑caffeine drink market is projected to reach $1.6 billion by 2028, amid global health concerns over caffeine, sugar and taurine in such beverages.
