India's Gen Z investors surge as Finance Minister urges banks to modernize

India is seeing a significant surge in stock market participation among Gen Z investors. According to the National Stock Exchange (NSE) July 2026 report, investors under 30 now represent 37.9% of India’s total investor base, a substantial increase from 23.5% in March 2020. New registrations for those under 30 rose by 59% between April and June 2026.

Despite this enthusiasm and the influence of digital platforms and ‘finfluencers,’ this demographic has faced heavy financial losses, totaling approximately Rs 1.05 lakh crore. The trend is driven by a desire for early financial freedom and a preference for digital-first investing.

In response to shifting demographics, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has urged public sector banks (PSBs) to modernize their image to compete with private sector banks, which are often perceived as more ‘cool’ by younger consumers. Sitharaman proposed a ‘Banking for Youth’ campaign starting October 2, targeting customers aged 16 and above. Suggested initiatives include launching ‘Yuva Kiosks,’ offering lifestyle-linked benefits like wellness vouchers, and providing free online courses through educational partnerships to build long-term relationships with students and young professionals.
