India's George Kurian resigns as Union Minister of State

Union Minister of State George Kurian has stepped down from the Modi government after his Rajya Sabha term ended on June 21, 2026. President Droupadi Murmu, acting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s advice, accepted his resignation with immediate effect.

Kurian, a senior BJP leader from Kerala and the party’s lone Christian voice in the Union Council of Ministers, held portfolios in the Ministry of Minority Affairs and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. He served as a Union minister since June 2024 and previously chaired the National Commission for Minorities and practiced as a Supreme Court lawyer.

The BJP chose not to renominate him in the June 2026 Rajya Sabha elections, ending his two‑year tenure in the cabinet.
