India's Global Capability Centres emerge as key innovation hubs for Viksit Bharat

Government officials and state leaders say Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India have shifted from low‑cost back‑office units to high‑value research, design and innovation hubs. Ajoy Sharma, Additional Secretary and Director General (Employment) at the Ministry of Labour and Employment, highlighted the sector’s rapid growth and its importance in achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s "Viksit Bharat" vision, describing GCCs as a vital pillar of the economy.

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivkumar met more than 150 GCC leaders in Bengaluru, reaffirming the state’s commitment to position Karnataka as a multinational innovation and technology hub. The discussion covered AI, talent development, digital infrastructure and policies to make doing business easier. The state aims to attract 500 new GCCs by 2029, generate 350,000 jobs and deliver about $50 billion in economic output.

Both national and state officials stressed a whole‑of‑government approach, urging coordinated effort among ministries, industry and other stakeholders to sustain the sector’s expansion and its contribution to India’s long‑term development agenda.
