India's government asserts legal authority in Delhi land case and police bravery award dispute

The central government told the Delhi High Court that it has no legal right to stop the acquisition of the Jimmkhana Club premises after the club's lease was terminated and a notice to vacate was issued. The court scheduled a hearing for the club's petition for a stay, while the government reaffirmed that the Public Premises (Unauthorized Occupiers) Act does not give the court jurisdiction over the eviction process.

In a separate matter, the government appeared before the Supreme Court seeking a resolution by August 7 on the conferment of the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry to former police officer Viresh Singh Chauhan. The court had earlier expressed displeasure at the government's failure to follow a Madhya Pradesh High Court order that recommended the award. The government has requested a brief adjournment to present a positive solution, citing the award’s scheduled announcement in mid‑August.
