India's HAL Airport Introduces First Satellite-Guided Helicopter Navigation System

Bengaluru's HAL Airport has become the first airport in India to operationalise the Required Navigation Performance – Category H (RNP CAT H) procedure, a satellite‑guided precision navigation system developed by the Airports Authority of India for helicopters. The system, validated by HAL test pilots and approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, reduces helicopter approach time from about 12 minutes to four minutes and enhances safety, efficiency and all‑weather capability, supporting air‑ambulance, rescue and VIP missions.

On 30 September 2026 the first satellite‑guided helicopter built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited was launched from HAL Airport. The aircraft incorporates the new navigation suite along with advanced communication and weather‑resilient features, reflecting India's broader push for indigenous aerospace technology and self‑reliance. Further trials are planned before the helicopter enters operational service.
