India's independence and partition in August 1947
The dawn of Indian independence on August 15, 1947, marked a monumental shift in history, characterized by both the celebration of freedom and the tragedy of partition. Following British Prime Minister Clement Attlee's announcement in February 1947 that Britain would end its rule, Lord Mountbatten was tasked with overseeing the transfer of power. Under the June 3 plan, the transition was set to occur within 72 days, involving the complex division of the military, civil services, railways, and police.
As midnight approached, Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his historic speech to Parliament, signaling the fulfillment of a long-held promise. The atmosphere in Delhi was electric, with an estimated one million people gathering near the Red Fort, spanning from Delhi Gate to Jama Masjid. While the streets were filled with people arriving by various means—including bicycles, carts, and even elephants—to witness the hoisting of the tricolor, the joy was tempered by the profound pain of the country's partition.
