India's jewellery sector urged to integrate formal education and enhance design

Industry experts and policymakers are calling for structural reforms to bolster India’s gems and jewellery sector. At a recent conference, leaders emphasized the necessity of integrating formal education with skill-based training to professionalize the industry and attract younger generations to craftsmanship.

Vinod Bamalwa of the Indian Chamber of Commerce noted a shortage of young artisans, suggesting that linking jewellery-making with recognized academic certifications could elevate the profession's status. Efforts are reportedly underway to introduce technical subjects at the school level to build a stronger talent pipeline.

Additionally, NITI Aayog Program Director Pravakar Sahoo highlighted the potential to expand India’s 8% global share of gems and jewellery exports. He urged the industry to move beyond diamonds by focusing on value addition, improved design, branding, and market diversification. To remain competitive, Sahoo noted the need to reduce industry fragmentation, improve infrastructure, and enhance access to finance while preserving traditional craftsmanship.
