India's July 2026 coal output climbs 7.5% to 69.75 million tonnes
India’s coal sector reported a 7.51% year‑on‑year increase in July 2026, with production reaching 69.75 million tonnes. Coal dispatch rose even faster, up 17.34% to 86.33 million tonnes. Cumulative output for the first four months of FY2026‑27 hit 302.24 million tonnes of production and 354.70 million tonnes of dispatch, a 5.87% rise over the same period a year earlier. State‑run Coal India Ltd contributed 50.35 million tonnes of production (up 8.42%) and dispatched 63.67 million tonnes (up 17.43%).
Renewable electricity accounted for 20% of India’s power‑generation mix in July, with generation rising 30% YoY to 36.25 billion kWh, the highest monthly output on record. Combined solar and wind capacity crossed the 100‑GW threshold for the first time and supplied 42.8% of electricity on 13 July. Consequently, coal’s share of the electricity mix fell to 65.7% from 69% in June, while coal‑fired generation increased 12.8% YoY to 119.40 billion kWh. Hydropower’s contribution dropped to 22.1% amid reduced rainfall linked to an El Niño pattern.
