India's LPG-to-PNG Transition Deadline Ends, Triggering Supply Cuts for Millions
The Indian Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has enforced a strict deadline for households to switch from LPG cylinders to piped natural gas (PNG). Under the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Amendment Order, 2026, consumers must surrender their LPG connection within 30 days of obtaining PNG service, with a final 90‑day compliance window ending on June 22, 2026. Failure to comply results in automatic termination of LPG cylinder deliveries and deactivation of the account.
The policy aims to eliminate duplicate connections, curb black‑market activities, and reduce the country's energy‑import bill by shifting users to PNG where networks exist. To protect migrant workers and tenants, the government introduced a transfer‑voucher mechanism that allows displaced families to restore LPG service if they move to an area without PNG infrastructure. The move also tightens digital delivery controls, requiring OTP verification and online booking for cylinder refills.
Millions of households are urged to verify local city‑gas coverage, submit address proof, apply for PNG subscription or obtain a technical exemption, and update their delivery authentication codes to avoid service interruption.
