India picks Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain as flag bearers for Glasgow Games

The Indian Olympic Association announced that weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and boxer Lovlina Borgohain will serve as India’s flag and baton bearers at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on July 23. IOA President PT Usha said it is “a matter of pride” that two women will lead the 126‑member Indian contingent at the OVO Hydro arena.

Chanu, a Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist and 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games gold‑medallist, aims to add another podium finish, while Borgohain, a Tokyo bronze medallist and 2023 World Championship gold‑medallist, seeks her first Commonwealth medal. Both athletes are currently training in the United Kingdom and are among India’s strongest medal hopes.

The Games will feature athletes from across the Commonwealth, and India’s delegation includes a record‑size team with additional support staff, such as a female physiotherapist assigned to para‑cyclist Leisha Das to ensure safety and compliance with gender‑staffing guidelines.
