India’s Modi government poised for cabinet reshuffle before monsoon session
Sources close to the ruling party say Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to conduct a cabinet reshuffle and expansion in July, ahead of the scheduled Monsoon Session of Parliament in the third week of the month. The exercise is expected to align with the announcement of a new BJP team under president Nitin Nabin and to accommodate regional, caste and loyalty considerations, with potential new faces from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Telangana.
The reshuffle has been linked to the Prime Minister’s overseas itinerary – a three‑day visit to Seychelles (June 27‑29) followed by trips to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand in early July, as well as a visit by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to New Delhi (July 1‑3). Telangana BJP leaders, while ruling out an immediate change, expect the reshuffle to occur after the PM’s return, possibly before the Monsoon Session. Speculation also surrounds the future of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and the possibility of adding another minister from Telangana.
Overall, the anticipated reshuffle aims to refresh the union council of ministers, integrate party office‑bearers into the government and address political compulsions ahead of upcoming state elections.
