Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project targets 2027 launch for first section

Construction of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor is progressing toward key milestones. The project, which utilizes Japanese Shinkansen technology, aims to connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad via a 508-kilometer route with trains capable of reaching speeds of 320 km/h.

According to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the first operational section is scheduled to begin service by August 15, 2027. This initial phase will cover a 50 kilometer stretch between Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat. The entire corridor is expected to be fully operational by 2029.

Major engineering works are underway, including the construction of the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) station in Mumbai, which is being built 30 meters underground at a cost of ₹3,680 crore. Additionally, a 7-kilometer undersea tunnel is being excavated near Mumbai using advanced tunnel boring technology. In Surat, station structural work is nearing completion, with designs inspired by the local diamond industry.
