India's Mumbai‑Ahmedabad High‑Speed Rail to Start Operations in 2027
India’s flagship Mumbai‑Ahmedabad bullet‑train corridor is slated to open its first operational segment between Surat and Vapi in August 2027, marking the first stage of a phased rollout for the 508‑kilometre high‑speed line. The project, built with Japanese Shinkansen technology and financed by an 81 percent, $17 billion loan from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aims for commercial service on the full route by 2029.
Construction, begun in 2017, has faced repeated land‑acquisition hurdles, regulatory delays and cost overruns, but most of the civil works—including a 21‑kilometre mountain tunnel and a 7‑kilometre under‑sea tunnel—are now complete. When fully operational, trains will travel at up to 320 km/h, cutting the Mumbai‑Ahmedabad journey to under two hours, compared with six hours today. The project is presented as a catalyst for further high‑speed corridors across India and aligns with upcoming international events such as the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.
