India's National Vascular Day Warns That Leg Pain May Signal Early PAD

On National Vascular Day, Indian health experts warned that leg pain while walking is often an early sign of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), a condition caused by narrowed or blocked arteries. Dr. P. C. Gupta, Clinical Director and Head of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at CARE Hospitals in Hyderabad, emphasized that the symptom is frequently misdiagnosed as normal ageing, joint trouble or muscle fatigue.

The Vascular Society of India reports that vascular diseases remain under‑recognised despite a rising burden: over 10 crore Indians live with diabetes and an estimated 5 crore have PAD. Each year about 1 lakh Indians undergo preventable limb amputations, largely due to delayed diagnosis of diabetic foot complications. Early vascular examinations, such as Doppler ultrasound, can detect PAD and help avoid major surgery, while also reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

High‑risk groups include people with diabetes, smokers, adults over 50, and those with hypertension or high cholesterol. Doctors are calling for greater public awareness and routine screening to save limbs and lives.
