India's NHAI launches barrier‑free tolling on Delhi‑Jaipur highway

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has activated a Multi‑Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system on the Delhi‑Jaipur stretch of National Highway 48 in Rajasthan. The first activation took place at the Manoharpura Toll Plaza, following an earlier rollout at the Daulatpura Plaza on June 19, with plans to convert the Shahjahanpur plaza next.

The barrier‑free system integrates Automatic Number‑Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag‑based electronic collection, allowing vehicles to pass without stopping. According to the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, the technology cuts waiting time, improves fuel efficiency, reduces emissions, and lowers operational costs for toll operators. Users must maintain a sufficient FASTag balance; otherwise an electronic notice is issued, with a 72‑hour payment window and a doubled fee if unpaid.

The initiative is presented as part of the Indian government’s push for digital infrastructure, aiming to enhance citizen services, ease of living, and ease of doing business nationwide.
