India's NHRC issues notices to police chiefs and Meta over 50 Instagram child abuse cases

The National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC) received more than 50 complaints in the past week about child sexual exploitation and abuse material (CSEAM/CSAM) being shared on Instagram. NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo announced on X that, based on the information, the commission sent notices to the police chiefs of Punjab, Delhi, Telangana, Maharashtra, Odisha, West Bengal, Haryana and Bihar, directing them to register FIRs and take appropriate legal action.

The NHRC also issued a notice to Meta India, urging the company to review its practices and ensure compliance with Indian laws on child safety and online content. The matter was referred to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. In addition, the commission summoned the Delhi Police Commissioner for failing to respond to an earlier summons regarding the same issue, emphasizing the need for prompt investigation and removal of such material from the platform.
