India's Nifty Index Faces Downside Risk as Global Sell‑off Spurs Record Retail Futures Exposure

Indian equity markets are expected to open lower as a global sell‑off, driven by strong US jobs data, rising Treasury yields and heightened Middle East tensions, puts pressure on the Nifty index. Analysts note that a break below the 23,100 support level could trigger a move toward 22,300.

Kotak's derivatives note highlights a record buildup of retail long positions in stock futures, estimated at about ₹1.87 lakh crore (≈ $19.7 billion). Concentrated exposure is seen in stocks such as ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, State Bank of India and others, across sectors like PSU banks, private banks, automobiles and FMCG. This crowded positioning raises the risk of a rapid unwind if the market declines.

At the same time, the Indian government announced an exemption of capital‑gains tax for foreign institutional investors in government bonds, aiming to attract further foreign capital. Domestic growth remains robust, with GDP expanding 7.8% year‑on‑year in the March quarter, outpacing forecasts.
