India's NSE Begins Trading Electronic Gold Receipts on Market
The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) started live trading of Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR) on May 18, 2026 after a successful mock session on May 16. EGRs are dematerialised securities that represent ownership of physical gold stored in SEBI‑accredited vaults, and can be bought, sold and held in demat accounts like other securities.
The product is open to retail investors, jewellers, bullion traders, refiners, institutional participants and foreign portfolio investors. Vaulting and collection centres are operational in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, with additional centres being activated in Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru and plans to expand to about 120 locations nationwide. The launch follows the Indian government’s recent hike in import duties on gold and silver to 15% amid foreign‑exchange pressure, aiming to improve price discovery, transparency and formal‑sector participation in the country’s gold market.
