India's organ donation shows gender gap: women donate, men receive

Government data for 2025 reveal a pronounced gender imbalance in living organ donation in India. Women accounted for 68% of living donors, while men made up 78% of recipients. The majority of female donors gave kidneys (71%) and livers (60%). Only 22% of living recipients were women.

In total, 20,138 organ transplants were performed in 2025, the highest annual figure recorded. Kidney transplants represented 62.03% of all procedures and liver transplants 20.46%. Deceased‑donor transplants rose to 3,526, up from 837 in 2013. A national digital pledge portal launched in 2023 has attracted more than 500,000 pledges to encourage deceased donation.
