India's passport falls to 125th in 2026 Global Passport Index

India's passport was placed 125th out of 197 (200) countries in the 2026 Global Passport Index, slipping one spot from 124th in the previous edition. Despite the drop, the composite score rose to 45.1, the highest in five years.

Indian passport holders enjoy visa‑free or visa‑on‑arrival access to 26 destinations, including Bhutan, Nepal, Jamaica, Macau, Palestine, Tunisia, Angola and Barbados, while visas are required for roughly 88 countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, China and the United Arab Emirates.

In the index’s three pillars, India ranked 136th in Enhanced Mobility, 118th in the Quality of Living index (up 11 places), and 94th in the Investment Index (up three places). European nations dominate the top ten, with Sweden first, followed by Switzerland, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Norway and Singapore – the only non‑European country in the top tier. Relative to regional peers, India sits between Namibia (124th) and Azerbaijan (126th).
