India's Premium Car Segment Approaches Half Electrified

Data from Jato Dynamics show that 49.1% of passenger vehicles in the Rs 30 lakh‑plus segment registered in India between January and May 2026 were battery‑electric, hybrid or plug‑in hybrid, up from roughly 10% three years earlier. This makes electric or hybrid models nearly one in two premium cars.

The shift is driven by affluent buyers who can absorb higher upfront costs, have access to home charging and often own multiple vehicles. They are also drawn by performance, lower running costs and total‑cost‑of‑ownership calculations. Mercedes‑Benz India CEO Santosh Iyer said EVs now represent about 14% of the brand’s sales, though charging infrastructure and resale values remain challenges.

Delhi’s EV Policy 2026 seeks to accelerate adoption by streamlining subsidies through a new portal and expanding charging infrastructure. Officials emphasize that convenient, shaded charging stations in public places and residential complexes are essential to address range anxiety and extreme summer temperatures, thereby making EV ownership practical for city residents.
