The protests began after a major exam was voided following a question‑paper leak, prompting a youth‑led movement that demanded educational reform, the resignation of the education minister and an end to criminal cases against demonstrators. The government acceded to the demands and pledged not to pursue legal action, though some state authorities later filed cases against hundreds of participants. Modi posted a video on social media urging society to show the youngsters the right path and emphasizing that punishment would not resolve the issue.
