PM Modi lauds defence, sports and green initiatives in Mann Ki Baat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 136th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat on 26 July 2026, marking Kargil Vijay Diwas. He paid tribute to the soldiers who fought in the 1999 Kargil war and announced a nationwide “Shaurya Vijay Yatra” to honour their sacrifice.

Modi highlighted several defence milestones: the induction of the indigenous stealth frigate INS Mahendragiri (over 75 % indigenous content), successful DRDO tests of the Pinaka long‑range guided rocket and the Kusha surface‑to‑air missile, and a major defence agreement with Indonesia covering BrahMos and Astra missiles. He also cited the launch of Vikram‑1, India’s first privately‑developed rocket, as a source of national pride.

The speech also praised sporting achievements – PV Sindhu’s Japan Open title, and the Indian women’s cricket team’s historic 270‑run Test victory over England at Lord’s, the first women’s Test played at the historic venue. Environmental initiatives were mentioned, notably the plastic‑recycling drive in Sitamarhi and the “Catch the Rain” water‑conservation campaign.

These announcements underscore India’s push for self‑reliance in defence and space, celebrate recent international sporting success, and emphasise sustainable development.
