India's Punjab and Chandigarh launch large-scale drug disposal and community anti‑drug campaign
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Chandigarh Zonal Unit, together with Chandigarh Police, carried out a joint drug disposal programme at Alliance Environment in the Phase‑I Industrial Area. The operation destroyed 1,859.180 kg of poppy straw, 24.310 kg of charas, 60 injections, 3.343 kg of ganja, 0.595 kg of heroin and 0.038 kg of charas. The effort is part of the nationwide Drug Disposal Fortnight (June 26–July 10) inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who highlighted the government’s resolve to protect youth from narcotics.
In parallel, the Punjab government under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is rolling out the “Pinda Da Haal” Action Plan to strengthen the state’s flagship anti‑drug campaign “Yudh Nashean Virudh”. The plan expands the role of the Nasha Mukti Morcha and its 1,708 Block Coordinators, who work with more than 1.25 million Village and Ward Defence Committee members to raise awareness, facilitate rehabilitation and monitor drug activity at the grassroots level. District‑level review meetings have been held across the state to assess progress and coordinate enforcement and community outreach.
