Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi have entered a political dispute regarding the implementation timeline of the Women's Reservation Bill (Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023).

Rahul Gandhi argued that the legislation, which provides for 33 per cent seat reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, was passed unanimously with Congress support in 2023. He criticized the government for delaying implementation and demanded the law be enacted unconditionally, without being linked to the delimitation process.

Kiren Rijiju countered that implementation is legally contingent upon a delimitation exercise based on census data expected after 2026. He suggested that due to these procedural requirements, the reservation cannot be implemented before the 2034 general elections. Rijiju also characterized Gandhi's recent remarks on women's freedom of expression as a "visible change of heart," challenging the Congress party to offer unconditional support for the bill.
