VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital Performs World's First Robotic AV Valve Replacement
Doctors at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi successfully carried out the world's first robotic systemic atrioventricular (AV) valve replacement in an adult patient. The operation addressed a rare combination of congenital corrected transposition of the great arteries (ccTGA) and dextrocardia, conditions that reverse the heart's lower chambers and flip its orientation.
The procedure was led by Professor Dr. Anubhav Gupta, head of the Department of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, under the overall direction of Hospital Director Dr. Kavita Sharma. Because the patient's heart was positioned on the right side, the surgical team devised a novel left‑sided robotic approach, using small ports, high‑definition 3‑D visualization and robotic arms, avoiding a sternotomy. The minimally invasive technique reduced pain, blood loss and infection risk, allowing the patient to recover more quickly.
The achievement is hailed as a historic milestone in global cardiac surgery, positioning the public hospital at the forefront of advanced robotic cardiac care.
