India's shipbuilders land major tug contracts with Svitzer and Kolkata Port
Svitzer, a Copenhagen‑based towage provider, signed a contract with Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd to build four 32‑metre TRAnsverse 3200 harbour tugs at the Pipavav shipyard in Gujarat. The deal, valued between Rs 251 crore and Rs 750 crore, is slated for delivery from early 2028 and aligns with India’s Maritime India Vision 2030, Make‑in‑India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
Following the announcement, Swan Defence shares rose to a fresh 52‑week high on August 6, 2026, trading around Rs 2,595 per share. The contract marks the company’s fourth consecutive export order, underscoring growing confidence from overseas clients.
Separately, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers received a Letter of Intent from Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata for a fully electric battery‑powered tug. Valued at Rs 37.94 crore, the 25‑metre tug will deliver a 15‑tonne bollard pull, a top speed of 9 knots, and will be supported by shore‑charging infrastructure, reflecting the port’s push toward greener operations.
