India's SIR Voter List Revision Becomes BJP Monitoring Campaign

The Election Commission of India is conducting a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, assigning booth‑level officers to update enumeration forms. Reports indicate that party workers frequently accompany these officers, using the exercise to gather intelligence on voters' political leanings. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has organized local councillors and MLAs to send a “virtual army” of foot soldiers to fill forms and relay feedback to party leaders, even filing objections against applicants who do not support the BJP.

The opposition Congress party has been preoccupied with internal factional battles and recent controversies, such as the NEET exam paper leak involving Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Meanwhile, the newly formed Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has drawn attention with protests at Jantar Mantar, led by activist Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite fast. Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal visited the protest site before Congress could. The National Conference also plans a sit‑in at Jantar Mantar on July 20 to demand the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir statehood.
