India's space sector expands with 440 startups and rising investment

India celebrated its third National Space Day, marking the anniversary of the Chandrayaan-3 lunar landing. During the celebrations, ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan reported that approximately 440 startups are now operating within the country’s space sector, a significant increase following recent industry reforms.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with space startup founders and CEOs, urging the private sector to transform India into a global hub for space talent and innovation. He highlighted India’s cost-competitiveness and the high risk-taking capacity of its workforce as key advantages. The Prime Minister also emphasized the necessity of policy consistency to maintain entrepreneur confidence.

Economic data indicates rapid growth in the sector. India’s space economy, currently valued at $9 billion, is projected to reach between $40 billion and $45 billion over the next decade. Private investment surged nearly six-fold from $100.5 million in 2021–22 to $618.5 million by March 2026. Additionally, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) saw revenue grow from Rs 321.77 crore in FY 2021–22 to over Rs 3,000 crore in FY 2024–25.
