India’s state‑run oil marketers keep fuel prices steady amid global crude volatility

The Indian government and state‑run Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have taken a "wait and watch" stance on retail fuel pricing as global crude markets remain volatile. Refineries are prioritising supply security and absorbing cost pressures, which has resulted in quarterly losses for major refiners such as Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), but has prevented shortages of petrol, diesel and domestic LPG.

Analysts note that India relies heavily on imported crude and is vulnerable to disruptions in key maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz. A supply crunch of cooking fuel in March‑April was addressed quickly, and OMCs have implemented dynamic measures at a heavy cost to their balance sheets.

The finance ministry warned that sustained high crude oil prices could further strain India’s fiscal deficit and current‑account balance. The July economic review highlighted growth resilience in the first quarter while flagging risks from Gulf tensions, a possible El Niño transition and other external shocks.
