India's Steel Production Capacity Reaches 222 MTPA, Targets 300 MTPA by 2030
India’s crude steelmaking capacity reached approximately 222 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) as of June 2026, according to the Ministry of Steel. This marks progress toward the National Steel Policy goal of 300 MTPA by 2030.
Key projects include the Bhilai Steel Plant’s expansion from 7 MTPA to 10.2 MTPA under an EPCM agreement with MECON, and the commissioning of a 258‑km slurry pipeline to the Bokaro Steel Plant that will deliver about 8.3 million tonnes of iron ore annually. Additionally, MECON and RITES signed an MoU to pursue consultancy and infrastructure projects domestically and abroad. The ministry highlighted the Green Steel Initiative, with 97 producers in 15 states receiving Green Steel Certificates for products such as TMT bars, coils, plates, and wire rods.
