India's textile industry to leverage sustainability for global competitiveness
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that sustainability is shaping the future of India’s textile industry. Highlighting an article by Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, the Prime Minister noted that initiatives involving textile recycling, clean production processes, and green technologies are making the sector more competitive and transitioning it toward a circular economy.
Minister Giriraj Singh emphasized that the Indian government is committed to balancing economic development with environmental protection. The industry is currently moving toward eco-friendly production models across various segments, including fiber, yarn, fabric, processing, and technical textiles.
India has set a target to reach a $350 billion textile and apparel industry by 2030. In this context, sustainability is being integrated as a central strategy for market access and responsible growth rather than being treated as an optional consideration.
