India's thermal power plants maintain 42.8 MT coal reserve for 14 days

India’s Ministry of Power reported that as of 12 July 2026 the country’s thermal power plants held 42.8 million tonnes of coal, enough to meet electricity demand for 14 days at an 85 % plant‑load factor. Coal‑based generation capacity totals about 230.8 GW, accounting for 69.54 % of the electricity supplied between April and June 2026, with peak‑hour output reaching roughly 188.8 GW (around 75 % of total generation).

A joint inter‑ministerial committee of the Ministries of Power, Coal and the Railway Board monitors daily coal deliveries and gives priority to coal rakes and dispatches to power stations. The committee also reviews scheduled maintenance, aiming to minimise outages during peak months, while the Central Electricity Authority can defer maintenance on a case‑by‑case basis. During FY 2025‑26, 9,470 MW of new thermal capacity was added and a further 2,260 MW has been commissioned in the current fiscal year.
