India's tourism sector set to double by 2036; Air India partners with ministry to boost inbound travel

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) estimates that India's travel and tourism generated $263.6 billion in 2025, supporting 46.2 million jobs and accounting for 6.6% of GDP. The sector grew 7.3% in 2025, outpacing the global average of 4.1%, and domestic visitor spending reached $203 billion, representing 86% of total tourism expenditure. WTTC projects the industry will expand to $527 billion by 2036, moving India from the world’s 10th‑largest to the fourth‑largest tourism economy.

In parallel, Air India and India’s Ministry of Tourism have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote the country as a global tourism destination. The agreement aims to coordinate marketing, storytelling, trade engagement and transit tourism, leveraging Air India’s network of 40 international destinations across five continents and its extensive code‑share partnerships. Officials said the partnership will enhance India’s visibility and attract more high‑value international travellers.
