India's traditional fabrics boost global fashion presence
India's textile heritage is highlighted by six regional fabrics: Banarasi Silk from Varanasi, Kanjeevaram Silk from Kanchipuram, Chanderi from Madhya Pradesh, Bandhani from Gujarat and Rajasthan, Pashmina from Kashmir, and Patola from Patan in Gujarat. These crafts, passed down through generations, underpin the country's growing influence on the world stage.
Designers such as Rahul Mishra, Manish Malhotra, Gaurav Gupta and Sabyasachi are now featuring Indian craftsmanship at Paris Haute Couture Week, New York Fashion Week and major red‑carpet events. Bridal couture remains the financial backbone for many brands, with India Couture Week in Delhi setting trends for the busy wedding season. Despite recent political protests, the fashion shows proceeded, showcasing collections that draw on the same regional artisans who produce the classic fabrics.
