India's UGC flags 32 fake universities, urges legal action

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has listed 32 self‑styled institutions as fake universities operating across India. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar said the central government has asked all state and union territory chief secretaries to register FIRs and take legal steps to shut down these entities, issuing public notices and warning letters to protect students.

The UGC also reminds the public that only universities with UGC‑DEB entitlement and NAAC accreditation can legally offer online degree programmes. Both measures aim to curb fraudulent institutions and ensure that online and distance education in India meet recognised quality standards.
