India's UPI hits record 23.2 billion transactions in May 2026
In May 2026 the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in India processed a record 23.20 billion transactions, a 24 % increase from the same month a year earlier. The total value of those transactions reached 29.90 lakh crore rupees, 19 % higher than May 2025.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) said the daily average in May was 748 million transactions and payments worth about 96,465 crore rupees per day. April 2026 had recorded 22.35 billion transactions and a total value of 29.03 lakh crore rupees, showing a continued upward trend from March’s 22.64 billion transactions.
The growth underscores UPI’s expanding role in India’s shift toward a cash‑less, digital economy, with the platform now used by a wide range of merchants and consumers for everyday payments.
