India's UPI marks a decade of digital payment dominance
India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has reached a decade of operation, facilitating a massive shift in the country’s digital payment landscape. In the 2025-26 period, the system handled approximately 24,161.69 crore transactions, valued at ₹314 lakh crore, averaging roughly 66 crore transactions per day.
Key to this success has been the interoperability of the system, which allows users to transact between different banks and applications without being confined to a single closed network. This design has driven adoption and competition, as noted in a 2025 IMF study. The infrastructure relies on the integration of Aadhaar, mobile connectivity, and the Jan Dhan bank account initiative to drive financial inclusion.
As the system matures, the focus is shifting from expanding basic access to improving consumer protection, usage depth, and trust. Future developments are expected to include credit on UPI, cross-border expansion, and the integration of generative AI within the fintech sector.
