India’s UPI processes 20 billion monthly transactions
India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has reached a milestone of processing over 20 billion transactions monthly, establishing a global benchmark for real-time digital payments and financial inclusion. A report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) highlights that India’s digital public infrastructure has successfully integrated hundreds of millions of users while maintaining rapid transaction growth.
In recognition of the platform’s tenth anniversary, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the book ‘Cashless Nation: How UPI Changed Everything’ at the Sangam 2026 conference. The book, authored by Dr. Santanu Paul and B. Sambamurthy, chronicles the evolution of India’s digital payments ecosystem and the policy decisions that enabled its unprecedented scale.
Looking ahead, BCG projects global payments revenue to reach $2.6 trillion by 2030. While growth in North America and Europe is expected to be around 5 per cent, the Middle East and Africa are projected to expand at 8 per cent. The report also notes that artificial intelligence is increasingly reshaping the sector by automating processes such as trade finance and improving product offerings.
