India's Vande Mataram Bill faces parliamentary opposition

CPI(M) MP John Brittas has lodged a formal objection to the "Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026" in the Rajya Sabha, calling the proposal to give the full Vande Mataram statutory status “constitutionally untenable.” He argues the Constitution deliberately kept the National Song separate from the National Anthem and that the Bill disregards that intent.

The State Platform for Common School System‑Tamil Nadu (SPCSS‑TN) has also urged MPs to reject the Bill, saying the complete song’s religious imagery and lack of nationwide consensus conflict with India’s constitutional secularism and fundamental rights. Both the MP and the organisation warn the legislation could breach Articles 25, 13 and 51A(h) of the Constitution.
