Curry Barker lands eight‑figure horror deal after $300 M success of ‘Obsession’

The low‑budget horror film Obsession, made for $750,000 by former YouTuber Curry Barker, has crossed the $300 million mark worldwide, becoming Focus Features’ highest‑grossing release and one of the most profitable movies ever made. The film’s momentum was driven by strong Gen Z audiences, repeat viewings and multiple weekends that outperformed its $17.2 million opening, with notable box‑office runs in the United States and India (approximately ₹84.6 crore after three weeks). Following this breakout, Universal Film Group and Blumhouse/Atomic Monster have signed Barker to an eight‑figure deal for his third original horror feature. Barker will write, direct and produce the still‑secret project, which will be co‑produced by Spooky Pictures and Divide/Conquer and distributed worldwide by Universal. NBCUniversal Entertainment chair Donna Langley praised him, saying, “Barker’s talent is redefining what’s possible,” while Barker added, “They’ve built the kind of home for bold, original storytelling that every filmmaker dreams of.” James Wan and Jason Blum also expressed enthusiasm for the continued partnership.
