Indies commemoration: Survivors recount Japanese occupation trauma

Survivors of the Japanese occupation in Indonesia are sharing their personal histories ahead of the Indies commemoration in Helmond on August 14. These accounts highlight the trauma and inequality experienced during World War II.

Ronald Olenroot, 84, recalls being held in a Japanese prison camp in Sukabumi, where he witnessed torture as a child. Trix Olenroot-Van Staden, 74, describes growing up in Bali and the eventual need to flee after her family was placed on a list for assassination due to their Dutch nationality.

Hans Vervoort, born in 1939, shared memories of being held in the Ambarawa internment camp on Central Java from 1942 to 1945. He described the daily hardships of the camp, including forced labor such as picking grass and catching flies, as well as the strict discipline where mothers were often punished for their children's mistakes.
