Indigenous and local communities denounce environmental damage from extractive activities

In Peru, residents of the Vilcabamba district in Choquetacarpo have reported suspected illegal mining activities. The community has called for immediate intervention from competent authorities to inspect the area, verify legal authorizations, and assess the impact on natural resources.

In Mexico, Maya communities in Yucatán, including Yaxcopoil, San José Tzal, Tebec, and Hotzuc, are taking legal action against the government and the judiciary. They allege that the expansion of stone material extraction sites is violating their rights to territory, consultation, and a healthy environment. The organization Utsil kuxtal reported that these projects are advancing without proper indigenous consultation. Specifically, in Yaxcopoil, complaints have been filed with environmental agencies regarding sites located near population centers and archaeological zones.
