Indigenous art and culture spotlighted for Native American Heritage Month
The Wai Gallery in Las Vegas and the IndigenousAF storefront are showcasing diverse works from Indigenous artists ahead of National Native American Heritage Month in November. The initiative aims to dismantle stereotypes by highlighting the varied histories and cultures of hundreds of tribal communities across the United States, moving beyond the misconception that Native and Alaska Natives are a monolith or exclusively live on reservations.
Featured artists and projects include Fawn Douglas, a Las Vegas Paiute Tribe citizen, who uses conduit wire for modern basketmaking, and various works ranging from traditional tattoos to narrative paintings. The gallery also hosts free community art programs, such as collage projects and sidewalk chalk painting, to foster connection through creativity.
