Indigenous Cinema Alliance announces 14 titles at TIFF

The Indigenous Cinema Alliance (ICA) has announced 14 titles for the inaugural edition of ‘TIFF: The Market,’ showcasing films and projects from various nations, including Cree, Inuit, Māori, and Sámi. The lineup includes official Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) selections such as Nyla Innuksuk’s ‘In the Heart of the South’ and Alexandra Lazarowich’s ‘Turtle Island Rap.’

This increased presence is supported by initiatives from the Indigenous Film Office (ISO) and Canadian federal government financing. These efforts aim to provide First Nations filmmakers with higher production budgets and the platform to tell stories in their own voices and languages. According to ISO CEO Kerri Swanson, there is growing momentum in the diversity and success of Indigenous filmmaking, bolstered by industry financiers and government support intended to foster reconciliation.
